Greenhead Moss Community Nature Park

Project Description
Development of a Feasibility and subsequent Masterplan Vision for Greenhead Moss Community Nature Park a 200ha site in North Lanarkshire. The site had a complicated history of peat cutting, draining, deep and surface mining, railways, farming, forestry, landfill and more recently of nature conservation. Sitting between and dividing on many levels the communities of Wishaw, Waterloo, Cambusnethan & Newmains the project had the challenge of identifying, prioritising and finally reaching agreement on the proposals to take forward to maximise community benefit and establish a strong landscape framework for the future.

Main Components
The project included landfill capping, reedbed construction, woodland planting and other habitat creation works as well as footpath construction through sensitive habitats (including a remnant peat bog). Implemented by a variety of procurement routes including contractors and training agencies. Considerable involvement with the Greenhead Moss Community Trust who took the project on from the Council.
