The University of Edinburgh
Award winning redesign of major city events space, forming the outdoor venue and setting for Graduations, Ceremonies and Festival activities associated with McEwan Hall. Located within the heart of the city & University’s central ‘Town & Gown’ campus, Bristo Square is a space with wide appeal, forming a hub for university students, academic staff and wider city residents.
A bold, contemporary design approach successfully delivers an attractive, accessible, and external spill-out supporting the refurbished and redeveloped listed building. A hardscape of robust and durable natural materials, the opening-up of formerly inward-looking space to reveal and better connect important boundary buildings creates an appealing outdoor hub/ meeting space. Improvements to complex levels enhance building-external connections, accessibility, and use, maximising large scale event flexibility at the same time as achieving day-to-day people appeal.
Bespoke designed & integrated/ removeable street furniture and utility infrastructure/
technologies support easy and efficient Fringe/ Festival/ event use.
The
square sets a distinctive benchmark in the delivery of the University of Edinburgh’s
Public Realm Masterplan and major civic events space.
